A comprehensive surgical workshop, the fourth of its kind, was recently conducted at our esteemed Department of Surgical Oncology, facilitated in collaboration with Johnson & Johnson- Ethicon, Gismo (Gastro Intestinal Surgery Minimal Observership), focusing on the advancements and refinements in minimally invasive surgical techniques.
It has been our interest to provide surgeons with the latest knowledge and practical skills in this rapidly evolving field. Faculties at our institute are experienced in minimally invasive radical surgical techniques.
First GISMO workshop was organized in 2018, 2022,2023 and present one 4th in 2025.
Our Head of Department Dr Abhijit Talukdar, Dr Deepjyoti Kalita, Dr Gaurav Das and Dr Shivaji Sharma along with Mch Surgical Oncology Residents were the organizing team for case selections and preparation of the appropriate and variety of surgery demonstration.
This intensive two-day workshop served as a platform for the dissemination of knowledge and practical skills in performing complex minimally invasive procedures, attracting six experienced surgeons from various parts of India keen to enhance their expertise in this rapidly evolving field.
The workshop curriculum was meticulously designed to cover a spectrum of advanced surgical interventions, with live demonstrations and training sessions led by our consultant surgeons, all of whom are recognized experts in their respective domains, highlighting the nuances of each procedure and sharing invaluable surgical pearls derived from years of experience.
The procedures showcased encompassed a range of challenging oncological resections and reconstructions, including total minimally invasive esophagectomy, a complex procedure for esophageal cancer requiring meticulous dissection and reconstruction, laparoscopic radical distal gastrectomy, laparoscopic intersphincteric resection for low rectal cancers, demanding precise sphincter preservation, radical cholecystectomy for gallbladder cancer involving advanced techniques, anterior resection for sigmoid cancer with emphasis on total mesorectal excision, and right hemicolectomy with complete mesocolic excision, central vascular ligation. Furthermore, the curriculum incorporated comprehensive training in central venous line placement and D3 lymph node dissection, essential components of oncological surgery aimed at optimizing patient outcomes by ensuring adequate vascular access and achieving thorough tumor clearance.
The workshop served as an invaluable opportunity for surgeons to witness and learn advanced surgical techniques, contributing to their professional development and ultimately enhancing the quality of care provided to patients with complex surgical conditions.
