A seminar in palliative care was organized at Dr B Borooah Cancer Institute (BBCI) on 13th September 2024. The topic of the workshop was “Methadone for Pain”. Methadone is a synthetic opioid agonist drug used for the treatment of chronic pain. Dr Kunal Ranjan Vinayak, Assistant Professor of Palliative Medicine and Care at the MMPMCC-Tata Memorial Center, Varanasi was the guest speaker in the program.
The seminar was jointly organized by the Department of Palliative Medicine, BBCI, and Indian Association for Palliative Care (IAPC)-Assam Chapter to upgrade the knowledge about the uses of methadone amongst the medical fraternity of BBCI and also the members of IAPC Assam Chapter. The seminar was held offline as well as online. Altogether 65 participants were present in person and 20 persons attended virtually from different parts of Assam.
Dr Kabindra Bhagabati explained the importance of understanding pharmacology and the proper uses of methadone. Precautions, patient selection, and regular follow-up are essential in methadone use. Earlier, Dr B B Borthakur, Director of BBCI felicitated the Guest Speaker and welcomed the gathering. He emphasized the use of various opioids for proper relief of pain in cancer patients.
